The fifth-ranked USC Trojans burnished their reputation as big-game players Thursday by running roughshod over sixth-ranked Penn State, 38-24, before 93,293 fans in the 95th Rose Bowl.
U.S.C. (12-1) rolled up the Pasadena Freeway with the nation’s top-ranked defense and a question mark of an offense, but they left behind only an exclamation point after quarterback Mark Sanchez passed for four touchdowns and a career-high 413 yards, the second-highest total in Rose Bowl history behind the 456 thrown by Oregon’s Danny O’Neil against Penn State in 1995.
